Everything You Need To Know About Call of Duty Prop Hunt

Share this post:

In the iconic first-person shooter (FPS) franchise Call of Duty, there are many competitive game modes where players engage in heated battles to climb the ranks and leaderboards. However, not every game mode is a serious affair. Sometimes, gamers need a break from Defuse or Domination and want some lighthearted fun. That’s where the fan-favorite Prop Hunt game mode comes into play.

Join us in discussing Prop Hunt in Call of Duty, from how the general gameplay works to where you can play the game mode right now. We’ll also unload some tips for beginners so they can start winning Prop Hunt matches.

CoD Prop Hunt Explained

In CoD, the Prop Hunt multiplayer game mode is best described as team-based hide and seek, with hilarious results. Just imagine a tree or some boots suddenly starting to move or a soldier with a powerful assault rifle being worried about a random trashcan on the sidewalk. It’s these wild situations that Prop Hunt allows for, as one team (Props) has players assuming the roles of typically inanimate objects across a map. In contrast, another team (Hunters) must track down and eliminate the Props.

What’s The Goal Of Prop Hunt?

The goal of the Props team is to stay alive until the time runs out, and they are given a bit of a head start (generally 30 seconds) to find spots to hide. Then, Hunters are let loose and must eliminate all Props to win a round. Hunters get a weapon, a sidearm, and two grenades as a fixed loadout in Prop Hunt.

How Do Loadouts Work?

Loadouts of course differ from one CoD to the next, but in Prop Hunt, the Hunters have access to the weaponry. There are also sometimes gameplay adjustments for the Prop Hunt game mode. For example, in Black Ops 3, both Hunters and Props have access to the Thruster Jetpack to get around with ease.

While Hunters have infinite ammo, they lose points or health when shooting at the wrong objects. That’s where Props can play mind games and use decoys to confuse the enemy and achieve victory through deception. While you can certainly play Prop Hunt with a strategy in mind, most players don’t take a win or loss seriously in this unique game mode.

Which Call of Duty Games Have Prop Hunt?

We’ve listed all the Call of Duty games that feature the Prop Hunt game mode, along with release dates and notable differences where applicable.

  • Modern Warfare Remastered: Prop Hunt became a permanent fixture on Aug. 1, 2017, after several Weekend Warfare events and a community vote. All Props automatically got the Dead Silence perk.
  • Black Ops 3: Prop Hunt arrived in Black Ops 3 on May 7, 2018, with the Operation Swarm event. A key difference is that players could use Thrusters, and Props could lock in mid-air.
  • WWII: Prop Hunt was added to Call of Duty: WWII during The Resistance event on Jan. 23, 2018. In this version, props get three decoys. We also saw a change in how a winner is determined, with preference given to the team with the most Prop kills.
  • Black Ops 4: On April 30, 2019, Prop Hunt was released for Black Ops 4 with Operation Spectre Rising. It has the same general ruleset as the WWII version.
  • Black Ops Cold War: Prop Hunt was added to Black Ops Cold War with Season 1 on Dec. 16, 2020, and it features the same rules as the Black Ops 4 iteration.
  • Call of Duty Mobile: Prop Hunt first appeared as a limited-time mode in Season 2 back in 2019 in CoD Mobile.
  • Black Ops 6: As a fan favorite, Prop Hunt was one of the first game modes available in Season 1.

Note: It is unclear when Prop Hunt will return to the CoD Mobile playlist.

Where To Play Prop Hunt

You can play Prop Hunt in the following CoD titles on various gaming platforms, including PC and the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

  • Black Ops 3
  • Modern Warfare Remastered
  • Black Ops 4
  • WWII
  • Black Ops Cold War
  • CoD Mobile on Android or iOS
  • Black Ops 6

For the best Prop Hunt experience, we recommend Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War because it’s the most current version gamers are still playing. Plus, in Call of Duty: Mobile, Prop Hunt mode isn’t a permanent fixture. And in case you’re wondering, Prop Hunt has never been available in any iteration of Call of Duty: Warzone.

Will Black Ops 6 Have Prop Hunt Game Mode?

Rumors suggest that Prop Hunt (and Uplink!) will return with Black Ops 6 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5. And in fact as soon as Season 1.5 was launched players were happy to see Prop Hunt available as one of the game modes.

Tips For Playing Prop Hunt

Want to win at Prop Hunt and reach the top three of the leaderboard? Of course, you do! We’ve got some tips to share below.

Keep Moving

As a Prop, you’ll periodically emit a noise that Hunters may track. Keep the Hunters guessing by moving to new locations when possible. You’ll get caught out quickly if you use the same hiding spot each game. For Hunters, it’s important to check popular hiding places, as many players have favorite spots.

Hide In Plain Sight

Learning to hide in plain sight will help you survive longer as a Prop. You don’t have to hide far away or in some little corner of the map. Instead, many players often overlook an object that seems too obvious, so use that to your advantage. You can use Decoys in some CoD entries to further trick those pesky Hunters.

Don’t Just Open Fire

As a Hunter, we recommend pausing to think before opening fire on an object. After all, if you shoot the wrong object, you could lose health or points, depending on the version of Prop Hunt. Props will try to trick you at every turn, so don’t let them have that satisfaction.

Know The Maps

If you have enough map knowledge, you’ll have little trouble hunting Props. For example, from experience, a player may know precisely where all mannequins spawn on Nuketown. If an object isn’t where it’s supposed to be on a map, it’s probably a Prop!

Don’t Take It Seriously

Our last tip is to have fun. Remember, Prop Hunt isn’t meant to be a serious game mode. Instead, it delivers something lighthearted and unique. Using Prop Hunt as a break from the competition can help players unwind, relax, and laugh a little.

Embrace The Chaos Of Prop Hunt

As much as we love CoD, we can all admit to feeling the stress of Ranked Play and simply trying to stay alive in most matches, right? Well, that’s why modes like Prop Hunt exist—to give us all a break from the sweatiness. The next time you’re feeling the heat, we suggest taking a deep breath and embracing the absurdity of Prop Hunt.
