Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, has been many things, but a Major winner was not something you could add to his laundry list of titles. With time going on and major figures from the CS1.6 and CS:GO hayday coming and going, it was looking like NiKo’s Major was never going to happen before he reitred. But come a return to IEM Cologne, now sporting that coveted Cologne title would change that. Now at the “old” age of 29, NiKo’s Cologne win is monumental for the wider esports space.

Unc still got it

At under 30, NiKo isn’t actually as old as the internet would lead you to believe. Esports has always been a game that is lead first by the young, with newer games and metas relying on the brute force mechanics that with raw aim and reaction time. As a result, the old guard that rose to prominence during esports early days often slowly get phased out. NiKo’s tenure in game has seen him move from top team to top as he strived for that missing piece in the trophy cabinet, racking up tournament wins and top 2 placements with FaZe and G2.

In a move that didn’t come as much of a surprise with the dawn of 2025, NiKo joined Saudi Arabia’s Team Falcons, alongside Kyousuke, m0NESY and TeSeS. For some, this looked like a move to the Saudi Retirement home, phoning it in while coasting on a big paycheck, a la Cristiano Ronaldo. Results weren’t off rip, immediately racking up Top 3 finishes, but struggling to put up 1st place finishes outside of a 3-0 win over his former team G2 in Bucharest 2025.

Moving to 2026, NiKo and co had seen plenty a final, but would struggle to lift an S tier trophy, even taking some unexpected losses to teams like Legacy at CS Asia Championships 2026 in what should have been a straight shot to a trophy lift.

You have some of the strongest shooters in the game, existing synergy with m0NESY and one of the most talented players in the world providing the experience that comes with age, so what was the change that was needed to turn a 2nd place into 1st?

There’s more to CS than shooting back

Despite what your Zyw0os, your donks would have you believe, there’s more to CS than aim. No-one exemplified that more in the modern game than one of tis most storied veterans; Karrigan joined the team on the 20th of April 2026. While it didn’t result in improving on their peak, bringing the average age up with the 36 year old IGL did show promise. Questions would come back to some less than stellar individual ratings from the elder, and at what point you need someone that can “actually shoot back” instead of loading into the server 4v5.

Why the NiKo Major matters

NiKo finally lifting the trophy at a Major is the sort of storyline resolution that ties up a longstanding loose end. Uncrowned Kings are a title no esports superstar wants to carry on as their legacy. As esports titles are starting to be challenged for and won by younger and younger players, and much like traditional sports, the scouting of underage players is becoming more and more common practice to lock in emerging talents, a longstanding player like NiKo being able to win a huge title in the game’s most competitive era means a lot.

Esports has such a wide viewership base, from youngsters to those that were playing the prequals on a monitor that could barely output 30 frames, legitimizing the grind for those past their prime years is a message that can reinvigorate life into so many different fields of esports. Players can withstand the test of time without being shoed away to Talent and managerial roles, if you’re hungry, you can go out there and hunt.

For fans of Starcraft, or the Fighting Game Community, where the game’s biggest stars from the humble beginnings are still swinging with the best and brightest of the new era, it was just another Sunday.
