Aurora Build, Abilities and Matchups

Share this post:

Aurora, known as the “Witch Between Worlds,” is a new League of Legends Champion. She’s also a battlemage caster, set to take Summoner’s Rift by storm with viable builds to compete and dominate multiple positions.

Let’s hop Across the Veil in our quest for knowledge and discuss everything LoL fans need to know about the rabbit-like champion, including a bit of lore, her abilities and passive, gameplay tips, best builds, items, and even strongest/weakest matchups.

Who Is Aurora?

In LoL lore, Aurora is a Bryni, a rabbit-like Vastaya, who uses a Spirit Magic Wand as her primary weapon. She was born in Freljord and has the unique power to see the spiritual and material worlds. Riot describes her as a “Whimsical Witchy Wabbit,” a freckled ginger bunny with a floppy hat and equally floppy bunny ears.

To quote Aurora: “I see the spirit realm and mortal realm simultaneously. This blended world is my own, and it’s beautiful.”

While many of her tribe saw her as crazy, her great-aunt Havu supported Aurora in studying the Spirit Realm and honing her powers. Later in life, seeking help for her spirit friend Haestryr, Aurora made an unlikely and grumpy friend in Ornn, who crafted her Spirit Magic Wand so she could create portals.

Aurora Unlock Price & Release Date

Aurora will be available on July 17, 2024, at roughly 12 p.m. PST (noon) | 9 p.m. CET, with the LoL 14.14 update. In its first week of release, the new champion should cost 7800 BE (or 975 RP) to unlock via the store. One week after Aurora’s release (July 24, 2024), her permanent unlock cost will drop to 6300 BE.

What Are Aurora’s Abilities?

Below are explanations of Aurora’s abilities, her powerful passive, and her ultimate.

Spirit Abjuration (Passive)

Aurora’s passive ability applies stacks of Spirit Abjuration for four seconds, stacking up to three times whenever she hits an enemy with an attack or spell. Upon consuming the stacks from an enemy Champion, she exorcises spirits from the enemies she damages, entering Spirit Mode, healing her, and granting her bonus movement speed.

Twofold Hex (Q)

With her Twofold Hex ability, Aurora sends out a missile that curses any enemies it hits for 3.5 seconds. Players can recast the Twofold Hex ability after half a second of marking one or more targets. She can also recast the ability to draw active curses back toward herself in the form of magical bolts, dealing damage to any enemies they pass through.

Across the Veil (W)

With the Across the Veil ability, Aurora leaps in her chosen direction via a portal to the Spirit Realm. She then becomes invisible briefly and enters Spirit Mode for four seconds. If you attack or cast abilities during the invisibility period, the stealth effect ends immediately.

The Weirding (E)

Aurora unlocks a window to the spirit realm with The Weirding, sending out a blast of energy, dealing damage, and slowing enemies by 80% for one second before she hops backward.

Between Worlds (R)

Aurora’s ultimate ability allows her to leap in any direction she wants, releasing a shockwave. It deals magic damage and slows (30%) any enemies hit. The Between Worlds ultimate then creates a circular rift for four seconds as Aurora enters Spirit Mode, dealing magic damage to enemies. In the rift trap, she gains additional movement speed and can dash from one side of the area to the other.

Aurora Gameplay Strategy

When developing Aurora, Riot Games thought of how a prey animal succeeds against a predator, outmaneuvering and tricking the predator instead of overpowering it outright. That’s how the early game experience with Aurora plays out. If her abilities don’t make it clear enough, Aurora is fast, using her rabbit-like agility to bounce around her opponents.

The trick to a successful midgame experience with Aurora is to keep poking and prodding at the enemy, consistently applying Spirit Abjuration stacks to the enemies. The longer Aurora stays in battle, the more she can heal with her passive while keeping her movement speed high.

Aurora’s consistent damage output in late-game scenarios bolsters her team’s crowd control and ability to pick off stray enemy Champions. Thanks to her Ultimate, there’s always a way to isolate and shut down an opponent, while Across the Veil provides a straightforward escape path.

Aurora is one of the squishier Champions, so we suggest poking from the outer rims of a teamfight and nuking down enemies from afar. With her gameplay style and set of abilities, Aurora is best used in the mid lane position, but she can also shine in the top lane and, with specific builds, in the jungle.

Best Aurora Items And Builds

Playing Aurora in the mid-lane, we recommend the Sorcery Rune page and start the match with a Health Potion and Doran’s Ring. The recommended Summoner Spells are Flash and Teleport.

Please note: The Aurora gameplay details, as well as the best items and builds, originate from the Public Beta Environment (PBE) data across thousands of matches analyzed by RankedBoost.com

Below, we’ve provided a mid-lane build that includes the best Runes for Aurora to use and the best items to purchase in precise order.

Best Runes for Aurora:

  • Summon Aery (Sorcery)
  • Manaflow Band (Sorcery)
  • Transcendence (Sorcery)
  • Scorch (Sorcery)
  • Biscuit Delivery (Inspiration)
  • Jack of All Trades (Inspiration)

Best Aurora Items & Order:

  • Blackfire Torch (1st) – Luden’s Companion as an alternative.
  • Sorcerer’s Shoes (2nd) – Ionian Boots of Lucidity as an alternative.
  • Liandry’s Torment (3rd) – Horizon Focus as an alternative.
  • Cryptbloom (4th) – Zhonya’s Hourglass as an alternative.
  • Void Staff (5th) – Rabadon’s Deathcap as an alternative.
  • Banshee’s Veil (6th) – Stormsurge as an alternative.

Pro tip: While the build provided is effective, it is always good to adapt to your situation. For example, swap Liandry’s Torment with Horizon Focus if you need more control and slow in your matchup.

Best Aurora Matchups

How strong or weak a Champion is against another is up for debate and fluctuates between LoL patches as Riot rolls out balance changes to Champions and items. With that in mind, we’ve got an initial list of 10 Champions that Aurora should have an edge over, and 10 that our fluffy bunny mage should have trouble against. The lists below are sorted in no particular order.

Aurora is strong against:

  • Ekko
  • Jayce
  • Swain
  • Fizz
  • Yone
  • Zed
  • Irelia
  • Neeko
  • Ahri
  • Sylas

Aurora is weak against:

  • Kassadin
  • Twisted Fate
  • Katarina
  • Ryze
  • Azir
  • Vex
  • Akali
  • Syndra
  • Malzahar
  • Tristana

As more data becomes available, Aurora may become weaker or stronger against specific Champions. It is important to note that players can pick up “counter items” to increase their chances against Aurora further. For example, you can use Lich Bane and Rapid Firecannon with Twisted Fate to gain additional movement speed and nuke down Aurora faster or use Seraph’s Embrace with Kassadin to put Aurora on the backfoot.

Are You Excited To Play As Aurora?

So now that you know more about Aurora, do you think you’ll give this new LoL Champion a shot? Of course, your decision to play as her depends on your approach to the game, especially the type of champion you typically use. But if you like the idea of a speedy and nimble glass cannon, then Aurora could be a new favorite for your rotation.
