Let’s take the pitch to discuss the FIFA World Cup 2026 top 16, including our predictions for the outcome of the Knockout Stage bracket, the top four teams, and who will lift the coveted trophy.

Important: These predictions reflect the perceived strength of teams and the latest outright tournament winner odds. The odds are subject to change without notice. Rankings and odds mentioned in this article are accurate as of July 3, 2026.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Schedule, Format & Bracket

The top two teams from each group and the eight best-performing third-place teams from the Group Stage formed the 32 competitors in the FIFA World Cup 2026’s Knockout Stage.

On June 28, 2026, the Round of 32 began. One of the host countries, Canada, took down South Africa 1–0. The format is a single-elimination bracket with a third-place decider. If the match is level after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and if necessary, a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

The Round of 16 kicks off on July 4, 2026, with Canada facing Morocco at the Houston Stadium in Texas. The Round of 16 matches conclude on July 7, and the Quarterfinals run from July 9 to 12. Semifinals are scheduled for July 14 to 15. The third-place decider will take place on July 18, and the Final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place on July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Our FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Predictions

To make our FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage betting predictions, focusing on the Round of 16 and beyond, we first used clear logic to eliminate some possibilities. We selected two frontrunner teams from each side of the bracket, since picking three or four from one side wouldn’t give a balanced view.

We also considered Round of 16 match winner odds, outright tournament winner odds, current FIFA rankings, and conducted detailed research into various stats, combined with expert opinion for a holistic approach.

Important: In our predictions, we note the implied probabilities, which indicate a team’s chances of success based on the odds. This analysis should not be interpreted as betting advice. Past performance does not guarantee future outcomes. Always gamble responsibly.

France (#1)

Ranked #1 ahead of their Round of 16 match, France is our top pick. Under the leadership of longtime coach Didier Deschamps, the 2022 runners-up are aiming for nothing less than lifting the trophy this year.

The squad barreled through Group I, as we predicted, stomping Senegal 3–1, Iraq 3–0, and Norway 4–1. In the Round of 32, France crushed Sweden 3–0 and will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16.

Visit our France vs. Paraguay betting page.

France’s right winger, Michael Olise, is leading the tournament in terms of assists, currently sitting on five before the Round of 16 match. Olise is on the precipice of making history, with one more assist tying the legendary Brazilian player Pelé, who has held the record for most assists (6) since 1970.

With someone like Olise feeding Kylian Mbappé, France’s attack is electrifying. Mbappé is one of the best forwards in the world with clinical striking ability, currently tied with Messi for most goals (6) at the 2026 World Cup thus far, and he’s gunning for more.

We predict that France will become the champions, defeating Paraguay in the Round of 16, the winner of Morocco vs. Canada in the Quarterfinals, and whoever they meet in the Semifinals, likely Spain or Portugal. Outright winner odds of 2.87 (+187) echo this sentiment, indicating France is the favorite to win the World Cup at a 34.84% probability.

Argentina (#2)

On the other side of the bracket, we have the defending world champions, Argentina, currently ranked #2 in the world. Under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni, Argentina lifted the coveted trophy back in 2022 following an intense 3–3 in regulation and a 4–2 penalty shootout.

Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player ever to play the beautiful game, turned 39 in June and is tied with Mbappé for the most goals (6) at the event thus far, despite playing one less match so far. Messi recently broke the record for the most World Cup goals (19) in a career. It’s a race between Mbappé and Messi for the Golden Boot, and we predict Argentina will clash with France in the Final on July 19.

Argentina’s flair and dominance at the World Cup are nothing short of brilliant. The squad easily topped Group J, crushing Algeria 3–0, Austria 2–0, and Jordan 3–1. At the time of writing, they are still in the Round of 32, primed and ready to face underdogs Cabo Verde for a spot in the Round of 16.

Visit our Argentina vs. Cabo Verde betting page.

We predict that Argentina will crush Cabo Verde, beat the winner of the Australia vs. Egypt Round of 16 match, and ultimately defeat either Brazil or England in the Semifinals to earn a spot in the Final.

There’s an 18.18% chance of Argentina becoming back-to-back world champions, as implied by the odds of 5.50 (+450). Odds of 2.75 (+175) indicate that Argentina has a 36.36% chance to make it to the final, second only to France.

Spain (#3)

On France’s side of the bracket resides Spain, currently ranked #3 in the world. Luis de la Fuente’s men got off to a rather slow start, drawing 0–0 against Cabo Verde in their opening Group H match.

The draw served as a wake-up call for Spain, as the team flourished in their remaining matches to top Group H, destroying Saudi Arabia 4–0 and beating Uruguay 1–0. In the Round of 32, Spain eliminated Austria with a flawless 3–0 record to qualify for the Round of 16. Therefore, Spain’s defense has not conceded one goal to any opponent in the World Cup thus far.

Spain vs. Portugal is one of the most anticipated Round of 16 matches, seen as a rematch of the 2025 UEFA Nations League final. Portugal won the match in a 5–3 penalty shootout after Cristiano Ronaldo made it 2–2 in regulation.

Odds of 1.44 (-227.27) imply that Spain will successfully take revenge on Portugal in the Round of 16 matchup, with a 69.44% chance of progressing to the Quarterfinals. We predict that Spain will defeat the winner of the United States vs. Belgium Quarterfinal and lose to France in the Semifinals.

Visit our Spain vs. Portugal betting page.

Outright winner odds of 7.00 (+600) indicate there’s a 14.29% chance for Spain to lift the trophy, while odds of 4.25 (+325) imply a 23.53% chance of the squad making an appearance in the Final.

England (#4)

Ranked #4 in the world, England has gone from strength to strength under Thomas Tuchel’s management. They topped Group L by defeating Croatia 4–2 in their opening match, drawing 0–0 with Ghana, and sweeping Panama 2–0. In the Round of 32, England showed their resilience on the pitch, coming back from a 0–1 deficit against DR Congo, with prolific striker Harry Kane scoring both goals.

We predict that England will defeat Mexico in a close Round of 16 matchup. Odds of 1.68 (-147.06) indicate that England is a slight favorite, implying a 59.52% chance to earn a spot in the Quarterfinals, where they’ll face the winner of Brazil vs. Norway. If England makes it to the Semifinals on their side of the bracket, we predict they’ll fall to Argentina, narrowly missing out on glory.

Visit our England vs. Mexico betting page.

If our predictions hold up, England could face Spain in the Third-Place Decider match and narrowly lose, earning a highly respectable 4th-place finish at the World Cup.

Outright winner odds of 10 (+900) imply there’s a 10% chance of England lifting the trophy for the first time since 1966. There’s a 21.05% chance that England could make it to the Final, as indicated by odds of 4.75 (+375), making them a top-four favorite.

An alternative to England is Brazil, who are aiming for its sixth World Cup win.
