5 Easy Steps To Change Your VALORANT Name

Changing your VALORANT name, also known as your Riot ID since November 2023, is painless. A Riot ID combines your “Game Name” and a Tagline. For example, if your name is “ThunderpickRules” and your Tagline is “#TWC24”, your complete Riot ID is ThunderpickRules#TWC24. The steps below detail how you can change your VALORANT name in minutes!

  • Ensure that VALORANT is not running. If you’re currently playing, close the client.
  • Open your preferred browser and navigate to the official Riot Games Account page.
  • From the left-hand side, select the “Riot ID” tab.
  • Decide on a VALORANT name that is not offensive and between 3 to 16 characters long.
  • Click on the “Save Changes” button.

Congratulations, Agents! You’ve successfully changed your Riot ID, representing your name in VALORANT.

Unfortunately, there is the chance someone could have already created the same Riot ID. In this case, you’ll get an in-game notification stating that the selected ID is already in use. Remember, dozens of players can have the “ThunderpickRules” name, but only one can have the “ThunderpickRules#TWC24” Game Name / Tagline combo.

Pro tip:  We suggest first tinkering with your Tagline if your preferred Riot ID combo is already in use so you can keep your VALORANT in-game name intact.

How To Change Your Tagline

You can change your Tagline using precisely the same steps as your name. A player’s Tagline is up to five characters long. It is alphanumeric and combined with your VALORANT name to form your Riot ID.

A Tagline in VALORANT always starts with a # and is followed by three to five characters. We recommend picking one that is easy to remember and share with your friends. If you don’t want to get creative, click the randomize button and you’ll receive a random Tagline. You can use the randomize button as often as you like until you see a Riot ID Tagline that you prefer.

VALORANT Game Name Rules

Riot IDs are alphanumeric (letters and numbers) for the Game Name and Tagline. While Riot Games provides a lot of freedom regarding in-game names for VALORANT, there are limitations. You can’t have a Game Name that exceeds 16 characters.

Both your name and Tagline must not be offensive or inappropriate. Below, you’ll find a rough list of what Riot Games considers offensive or inappropriate for Riot IDs, per an official post from the developer.

  • Implied or blatant hate speech, offense, harm, violence, or harassment towards individuals or an identity group (e.g., cultural, racial, gender, social, religious, political, national, and so on).
  • Explicitly attacking social causes or political views.
  • Sexual content that is violent, obscene, criminal, or vulgar.
  • Profanity and referencing hard drugs or underage illegal anything.

Like your VALORANT name, the Tagline portion of your full Riot ID cannot be offensive or inappropriate. Other players can report your Riot ID if they deem it offensive. If your name is offensive and gets flagged, Riot Games may change it and notify you.

If your name is flagged and changed in VALORANT, but you don’t think it is offensive, you can contact Riot Games customer support.

A few words of warning: repeat offenses can result in a penalty to your account. Just because you don’t think something is offensive doesn’t mean many other players or Riot Games consider specific words or phrases appropriate. If you believe you are living on the edge, step away and choose another VALORANT name.

Is Changing Your Riot ID Free?

Yes, changing your name in VALORANT is free. So why did you hear about a $10 name change option? In October 2023, Riot Games planned to implement an in-game currency fee to change your name. However, following some community backlash, the developer dropped the plan for a fee in November 2023.

How Often Can You Change Your VALORANT Name?

You can change your name in VALORANT every 90 days. With the transition to the Riot ID system at the end of 2023, Riot Games had several ideas of how often players could change their VALORANT name. The one-month period was too short and not feasible for the developer, who noted how it “just isn’t something we can do from a technical and business perspective.” At the same time, 365 days was too long of a waiting period for the community.

Riot Games settled on a 90-day waiting period to change your name for free in VALORANT. At the time of writing, there’s no way to speed up the process.

Pro tip: While you are busy finalizing your Riot ID, we suggest securing your account with Two-Factor Authentication and choosing a unique password. After all, these options are on the left-hand side just below your Riot ID!
