Each type has its own unique animation, hundreds of knife skins, and beautiful designs. CS2 knife commands are strings of text that you can type or paste into the game’s developer console, spawning a base knife type of your choice. However, there are some caveats. You can only use knife commands with cheats enabled; there’s no way to attach CS2 skins, and the process is not available in matchmaking.

So, what’s the purpose of these commands? Many players use them to preview CS2 knives and their respective, unique animations for stabbing and inspection. Knives are hard to come by in CS2, requiring either exceptional luck while cracking open some of the best cases, opening your wallet, or going the Trade-Up route.

With CS2 knife commands, players can essentially “try before you buy” to test the feeling of holding the different melee weapons in your virtual hands before committing.

How To Enable & Use CS2 Knife Commands

For first-timers, using console commands in CS2 may seem daunting, but we assure you it’s not. Here’s how to get started, from enabling the console to spawning and changing knives.

Enabling CS2 Developer Console

If you’ve never used the CS2 developer console before, you must enable it by following these steps.

Open Steam and complete any updates.

Launch Counter-Strike 2 from your Steam Library.

Open the Settings menu (gear icon in the top-left corner).

Click on the Game tab.

Toggle Enable Developer Console to “Yes”

Alternatively, use the
-console
launch command. Check out our guide to all CS2 launch commands and their functionality for an in-depth walkthrough.

Enabling Cheats & Knife Drops

After you enable the developer console, launch a Practice match vs. bots. Click on the “Play” button then select “Practice” and the “Casual” game mode. Casual is preferred, since Deathmatch has a bonus weapon swap feature, which clashes with the default key to drop a knife.

Once the game loads, press the Tilde (
~
) key to open the developer console. We recommend first removing the bots with the
bot_kick
command. Now, type
sv_cheats
1 into the developer console and press Enter. Cheats are now enabled.

To enable the ability to drop a knife just like you would a gun, type
mp_drop_knife_enable 1
into the developer console and press Enter.

Dropping, Changing & Creating Knives

With both the
sv_cheats 1
and
mp_drop_knife_enable 1
commands active, you can now drop your current knife. Equip your knife and press the drop weapon key (default drop weapon key is “G”).

With the knife now on the ground, aim at it with your crosshair. Open the developer console and use the
subclass_change
[ID] command to change an item’s knife type, with the [ID] portion representing your desired codes. For example, a Bayonet’s knife code in CS2 is 500, so the command will look like this: subclass_change 500. You’ll notice the knife on the ground changing to a bayonet.

The second option is to create another knife from thin air. Point towards an empty space on the ground and use the command
subclass_create
[ID] to create a new knife. To create Shadow Daggers, the command is:
subclass_create 516

Shadow Daggers will spawn. Drop your current knife and run over the Shadow Daggers on the ground to pick them up.

Complete List of CS2 Knife Commands & Codes

You’ll find the commands for creating or changing to every knife currently in CS2, along with their respective codes.

Knife Type

Knife Code (ID)

Knife Change Command

Knife Create Command

Default CT Knife

42

subclass_change 42

subclass_create 42

Default T Knife

59

subclass_change 59

subclass_create 59

Bayonet

500

subclass_change 500

subclass_create 500

Classic Knife

503

subclass_change 503

subclass_create 503

Flip Knife

505

subclass_change 505

subclass_create 505

Gut Knife

506

subclass_change 506

subclass_create 506

Karambit

507

subclass_change 507

subclass_create 507

M9 Bayonet

508

subclass_change 508

subcla
ss_create 508

Huntsman Knife

509

subclass_change 509

subclass_create 509

Falchion Knife

512

subclass_change 512

subclass_create 512

Bowie Knife

514

subclass_change 514

subclass_create 514

Butterfly Knife

515

subclass_change 515

subclass_create 515

Shadow Daggers

516

subclass_change 516

subclass_create 516

Paracord Knife

517

subclass_change 517

subclass_create 517

Survival Knife

518

subclass_change 518

subclass_create 518

Ursus Knife

519

subclass_change 519

subclass_create 519

Navaja Knife

520

subclass_change 520

subclass_create 520

Nomad Knife

521

subclass_change 521

subclass_create 521

Stiletto Knife

522

subclass_change 522

subclass_create 522

Talon Knife

523

subclass_change 523

subclass_create 523

Default Knife (Neutral)

524

subclass_change 524

subclass_create 524

Skeleton Knife

525

subclass_change 525

subclass_create 525

Kukri Knife

526

subclass_change 526

subclass_create 526

Customizing Knife Commands With Binds & Aliases

You can further streamline the process of previewing different CS2 knife types via console commands by creating aliases. Instead of using the code
subclass_create 515
, which may be difficult to remember, you can simply call the item by its name.

As an example, just open the developer console and type in one of these commands:

alias “
get_butterfly
” “
subclass_create 515
“

alias “
get_kukri
” “
subclass_create 526
“

With cheats enabled, you can now simply type
get_butterfly
or
get_kukri
into the developer console and the corresponding knife will spawn. This method works with all available knives listed in the previous section.

You can create any type of alias, too. For example, you can use the alias “thunderpick_rules” “
subclass_create 507
” so that every time you type thunderpick_rules into the developer console, another Karambit spawns.

One alias command can also enable cheats, enable knife drops, and create a new knife item. In the example below, the command thunderpick_wins enables cheats, knife drops, and creates the Kukri knife.

alias thunderpick_wins "sv_cheats 1; mp_drop_knife_enable 1; subclass_create 526"

One Keybind To Spawn A Knife

You can go even further by binding a key to automatically enable cheats, drop knives, and spawn a specific knife. The example below spawns the Butterfly Knife when the P key is pressed.

bind P "sv_cheats 1; mp_drop_knife_enable 1; subclass_create 515"

You can substitute the
subclass_create
portion of the commands with
subclass_change
, which will change the knife item you are pointing to with your cursor.

Advanced users can also try adding these binds to an autoexec.cfg file and use the
+exec autoexec.cfg
launch option to further automate the process. However, our testing in the April 2026 version of CS2 found that the keybinds often didn’t stick when using the autoexec.cfg option.

For reference, the default install path of CS2 is C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\\game\\csgo\\cfg

Testing & Previewing Different Knives In CS2

Before you decide to purchase cases or a new knife directly from the Steam Marketplace, you should experiment with different knife types. Once inside the server, press the Tilde (~) key to open the developer console, and first type in
bot_kick
and press Enter, removing all the bots. You can also use the
bot_quota 0
command to ensure that bots do not rejoin the server while you are busy testing knives.

Now, use the
mp_roundtime_defuse 60
command to make the clock 60 minutes to avoid any interruptions.

With cheats and knife drops enabled, use the
mp_drop_knife_enable 1
command. Now, drop your current knife and use either a
subclass_change
command to change a specific knife or the
subclass_create
command to spawn a new item.

Once you have the desired knife you’d like to test, inspect it (default key is F), run around, and slash! There is no gameplay benefit to using an expensive Karambit over the default T or CT option. It’s all about style points, and wielding a shiny new knife could boost your morale.

However, switching to any knife does make the player character run faster, and earning a silent kill on an opponent nets you a lot of in-game cash in official matches.

Using CS2 knife commands allows you to experiment with different types until you find the look and animation you love most. And when you finally get that special knife, it’s all about in-game flair and bragging rights.

Many players want different, often expensive knives, but cannot afford them. With these knife commands, they can have a taste of what it’s like to run around with a Karambit, minus the hit to your budget.

Limitations & Requirements for Knife Commands

There are some limitations to using knife commands in CS2. First off, since knife commands require sv_cheats 1 to function, you can’t use them in official matchmaking. To enable knife drops via
mp_drop_knife_enable 1
, you must enable cheats. The only places you can enable cheats are practice, private, or custom games.

Another limitation is that there is no way to spawn specific knife skins. When you use a CS2 knife command, you’ll only see the default, vanilla skin.

If the developer console shows the error SV: Cheat command ‘subclass_create’ ignored, you’ll know that cheats are not enabled.

If the developer console show this error: subclass_change: Selected entity env_cs_place doesn’t match requested subclass 517’s entity type weapon_knife, you’ll know that your cursor isn’t placed directly on the item you wish to change to the Paracord Knife, as an example.

Community Engagement & Resources

With our complete guide to CS2 knife commands, you won’t need any additional resources to do all the testing and previewing your heart desires.
