Valve

Important note: At the time of writing, Deadlock is in active development. All details, including map objectives such as the Unstable Rift and Soul Urn, are subject to change. The developers may choose to remove or significantly modify any aspect of Deadlock at their discretion.

How Unstable Rift Works In A Deadlock Match

Deadlock’s Unstable Rift is, at its core, a very basic King of the Hill-style objective. Once it spawns, a team must occupy its zone until the capture meter hits 100%.

If the enemy team enters the zone, they must be eliminated with haste. The capture zone has a 20-meter radius around the bridge where the Unstable Rift spawns.

It takes roughly 12 seconds to capture an Unstable Rift, not including comeback modifiers. While the capture meter moves up slowly as teams duke it out, the final 1% cannot be completed if there’s a single enemy in the zone.

Ft. Valve

If neither team manages to reach 100% capture, the Unstable Rift dissipates, no Rift Troopers spawn for either side, the primary reward is lost, and some shiny balls of Souls shoot up into the air.

Deadlock’s Unstable Rift Spawn Timer & Locations

An Unstable Rift can spawn in one of two locations: the bridges at the midpoint of the side lanes. It’ll spawn randomly at either the left (York Avenue, aka the yellow lane) or the right (Park Avenue, aka the green lane) side of The Cursed Apple.

An in-game announcement reading “An Unstable Rift is opening” appears on your screen 20 seconds before the objective goes live, at which point a map marker will appear for all 12 heroes.

The first Unstable Rift will spawn between 10 and 12 minutes into a match. Once the first objective is completed, another will spawn six to eight minutes later. This cycle continues until the match ends.

Ft. Valve

Rewards For Winning An Unstable Rift In Deadlock

Teams can earn heaps of Souls when successfully capturing an Unstable Rift objective. The base bounty is 1482 Souls, and this number increases by 222 Souls each minute of game time.

Unlike other objectives in Deadlock, the reward starts increasing by 222 Souls per minute at the 13-minute mark, instead of minute zero. The reward is distributed instantly and equally to all team members, regardless of their location on the map.

The vital advantage gained from capturing an Unstable Rift is that “mega creeps” (Rift Troopers) will spawn in the lane. They have a distinct black color theme and are larger than regular Troopers. Rift Troopers do not drop Souls when killed. A minimum of five Troopers spawn.

Ft. Valve

They have +100% health and damage compared to normal Troopers for the first Unstable Rift of a match, as well as 30% Spirit Resist and 25% Melee Resist. Claiming consecutive Unstable Rifts spawns more powerful Rift Troopers, with health and damage increased by 20%, and 5% additional Spirit Resist.

Unstable Rift Comeback Mechanics

The team that is behind in Souls when an Unstable Rift spawns will receive combat bonuses within a 35-meter radius of the objective. The strength of the bonuses depends on how far behind a team is in Souls, with a maximum 15% difference in total net worth.

At a maximum difference, the Unstable Rift comeback mechanic reduces the trailing team’s required capture time by 50%, while the leading team has their capture time increased by 50%. The trailing team also gets a 35% increase in Bullet, Spirit, and Debuff Resist.

To further bolster the trailing team’s efforts to push the enemy base, they also get up to nine additional Rift Troopers if they capture an Unstable Rift. That’s a maximum of 14 Rift Troopers, spawning at half-second intervals.

Ft. Valve

Deadlock Objective Changes: Soul Urn & Unstable Rift

If you are a fan of the Soul Urn objective, don’t worry! The Soul Urn is still one of the primary map objectives in The Cursed Apple. It spawns every five minutes starting at the 10-minute mark on either side lane (always beginning at yellow).

With the addition of the Unstable Rift to Deadlock’s sprawling map, Soul Urn running is now its own objective, instead of forming part of a multi-phase objective. It is deposited at the drop-off point immediately, rather than initializing a King of the Hill-style objective.

The Unstable Rift now functions the same way that the Soul Urn drop-off point mini-objective did, where players had to occupy and capture the zone to reap the Soul Urn’s rewards.

Here are the official Soul Urn gameplay changes that accompanied the release of Unstable Rift:

Urn running is now its own objective. Spawns on either end of the map (where the previous neutral pickup locations were), and gets delivered to the opposite end. Spawns at 10/15/20/25/etc.

Urn runner is no longer revealed and is not disarmed or silenced (going through a doorway or mirage teleport still drops it).

Urn cannot be manually dropped. It gets dropped when you get hit with a light or heavy melee, are stunned, or are killed. It stays where it drops and does not walk back home.

Urn runner can no longer parry.

Urn bounty value starts decaying after 45s from being picked up. It drains gradually over another 45s, and then the urn is removed when the bounty is empty.

Urn is deposited immediately at the drop-off point.

Urn bounty when deposited is worth 250 + 70/min for just the urn runner. Still has the comeback bounty component. Upon deposit, all of the souls are released as orbs into the air (if another ally secures the orbs, they share the bounty with the urn runner).

Urn runner gets +4 permanent buffs on deposit.

Urn is now louder when it talks and is easier to hear by nearby enemies.

After 3 Minutes from spawn, the Urn will start walking very slowly on its own towards the deposit location.

Urn runner’s passive bonuses while holding it now scale based on how behind you are, rather than being on or off (same as the Unstable Rift 0%-15% NW linear scaling). Bonuses are the same as those for the previous Urn runner.

On July 13, 2026, Valve added new hero-specific Soul Urn voice lines.

Tips For Mastering Deadlock’s Unstable Rift Objective

Looking to dominate The Cursed Apple? No problem! We’ve got five tips that will help you master the Unstable Rift objective, pushing your team one step closer to the enemy Patron.

Communicate Spawn Location

The initial in-world appearance of an Unstable Rift on the map is visual-only and lasts for 60 seconds before the actual objective spawns. You can’t interact with it, and, importantly, it doesn’t appear on the minimap until only 20 seconds remain.

It is of the utmost importance to inform your entire team as soon as you spot the initial effect so they can swarm the objective quickly. Keep track of the in-game timer and get a head start at clearing side lanes as the next spawn window approaches.

Establish Wave Priority

If you find an Unstable Rift spawn early, you can gain another advantage by establishing wave priority. Simply put, you should kill enemy Troopers and push deeper into enemy territory so that your Troopers are much farther forward than theirs.

By establishing wave priority early, you can make it extremely difficult for the enemy to contest an Unstable Rift.

Earn Souls If Unstable Rift Goes Uncaptured

If both teams fail to fully capture the Unstable Rift within one minute, it will close. The game will send a warning to all players that the Unstable Rift will close in 50 seconds. Once it does, Souls will launch into the air.

Shoot these little balls of Souls while they are in the air to claim them before enemy players can. This gives your team a resource advantage while denying the enemy.

Force Push The Blue Lane

While the objective can only spawn in the yellow or green lanes, teams can gain an advantage by pushing out the blue (middle) lane roughly one minute before the Unstable Rift spawns.

If your team can push the lane to, for example, the enemy Walker, the opposing team will be forced to leave at least one player in the blue lane to deal with the blue Walker wave. This can potentially give you a numbers advantage.

Use Rift Troopers As A Diversion

Once you secure an Unstable Rift and the powerful Rift Troopers spawn, there’s a temptation to push with the wave to overwhelm the enemy. However, that’s not always the best approach.

While the first Unstable Rift at around 11 minutes is great for pushing with the Rift Troopers into the enemy Walker, teams should consider the state of the game after subsequent captures. You can also use the Rift Troopers as a diversion while pushing the middle lane or taking down the Mid Boss.

FAQs About Deadlock’s Unstable Rift

We’ve answered your frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Unstable Rift objective in Deadlock below.

When Did Unstable Rifts Release?

The map objective was officially released by Valve on June 30, 2026.

Where Does The Unstable Rift Spawn?

The Unstable Rift can spawn on the bridge of either side lane. It’s random, so watch out for the in-game announcement.

Can Unstable Rifts Spawn In Mid Lane?

No, Unstable Rifts cannot spawn in the mid lane.

How Long Does An Unstable Rift Last?

Once the objective officially begins (capture becomes possible), the Unstable Rift lasts 60 seconds, with an in-game warning at 50 seconds to inform players the objective is closing.

Will Unstable Rifts Stay In Deadlock?

Potentially.
