League of Legends (LoL) has a massive roster of more than 160 champions, each with unique spells, intriguing backstories, and distinctive playstyles. However, what truly sets them apart is their choice of weaponry, which ranges from guns and hammers to bows and axes. But who uses a sword in LoL?
In this guide, we’ll list all the champions who use swords and dive into each champ’s lore within the world of Runeterra. You can bet your bottom dollar that we’ve scoured the depths of Riot Game’s famed MOBA video game to bring you all the juiciest details!
LoL Champions With Swords
1. Aatrox The Darkin Blade
Once a protector of Shurima against the Void, Aatrox became corrupted by Darkin and obsessed with a nihilistic mission to destroy Runeterra. While the Aspects later imprisoned him within his greatsword, Aatrox found freedom by possessing anybody who wields it. Now, his blade is a manifestation of his rage and a conduit for his dark essence.
2. Fiora The Grand Duelist
Fiora is a feared duelist in Valoran and an iconic sword-wielding champion in LoL. Hailing from House Laurent of Demacia, she displayed incredible prowess from a young age. Her bluesteel rapier is more than a weapon; it’s a symbol of honor. In fact, she used it to kill her father after he disgraced the family name.
3. Irelia The Blade Dancer
It may not be a traditional sword, but Irelia wields a set of levitating blades that she can control using telekinesis—an ability she learned during the Noxian invasion of Ionia. Her ultimate, “Vanguard’s Edge,” releases a barrage of blades that damages and reveals them, while her signature spell, “Bladesurge,” allows her to dash and strike enemies with her blades.
4. Garen The Might of Demacia
Garen is a proud member of the Dauntless Vanguard, making his broadsword as much a symbol of strength as it is a weapon of war. He was born into the Crownguard family of Demacia, and his blade reflects his commitment to justice, honor, and his duty as a paragon defender of his homeland and its ideals.
5. Katarina The Sinister Blade
Katarina is a master assassin raised under the tutelage of her father, General Du Couteau. While her impulsive actions initially disgraced her family, her penchant for combat earned her a reputation as The Sinister Blade. A deadly Noxian enforcer, she wields two curved blades designed for quick, lethal strikes.
6. Kayle The Righteous
Unlike her twin sister Morgana, Kayle doesn’t rely on magic. Instead, she bears a celestial long sword imbued with divine power. The blade signifies Kayle’s commitment to justice and her identity as one of the Righteous. The sword transforms with Kayle’s divine ascent, becoming more powerful—even at range.
7. Leona The Radiant Dawn
Similarly to Kayle, Leona is another iconic League of Legends sword-wielding champion. The blade reflects her role as the Radiant Dawn, in which she protects Mount Targon and its people. The sword features motifs and symbols of the Solari, allowing Leona to channel solar energy into her spells and physical attacks.
8. Master Yi The Wuju Bladesman
Master Yi hails from Ionia, an island renowned for its Wuju sword-fighting style. However, after the Noxian invasion destroyed his village, Yi became one of the few living practitioners and devoted his life to preserving its legacy. His sword (the “Seven Lenses of Insight”) is an extension of his body and spirit, making it central to his role as the Wuju Bladesman.
9. Riven The Exile
Riven wields a huge runic blade in League. It first symbolized Noxian power, but after it shattered during the invasion of Ionia, it became a metaphor for her fractured identity and desire for atonement. Despite her blade’s broken state, Riven’s abilities, “Broken Wings” and “Blade of the Exile,” exemplify its remaining power.
10. Samira The Desert Rose
Born in wore-torn Shurima, Samira faced hardship from an early age. After losing her home and family, her despair led her to find a new life in Noxus as an elite military combatant. Samira wields a scimitar blade and handgun, seamlessly switching and chaining her attacks with skill and precision in team fights.
11. Shen The Eye of Twilight
As the Eye of Twilight, Shen serves as a bridge between the spiritual and physical worlds. His weapons embody this balance and duty to protect both realms, and they feature a pair of elegant but lethal spirit blades. These swords are also imbued with spiritual energy, which is evident in his ability kit.
12. Tryndamere The Barbarian King
Hailing from Freljord, Tryndamere is a LoL champion who uses a massive greatsword, a weapon that reflects his raw strength and insatiable rage. It’s depicted as fairly worn, presumably due to the many battles the Barbarian King fought and survived. His sword is a symbol of his strength and unbreakable spirit.
13. Viego the Ruined King
Viego wields a large ethereal sword known to many League of Legends players: the Blade of the Ruined King. This dark, spectral weapon fuels his power and symbolizes his tragic fall from grace after he sought to bring his wife, Isolde, back to life. Nearly driven to the brink of madness, Viego now roams Runeterra and destroys anything in his path.
14. Yasuo The Unforgiven
Yasuo was born in Ionia and exhibited exceptional swordsmanship from a young age. He wields a mighty katana sword, combining the power of the wind for rapid and precise kills. Yasuo was blamed for killing his master, Elder Souma, and his katana represents his journey as a guilt-ridden exile to a vengeful samurai determined to restore his honor.
15. Yone The Unforgotten
Yone is Yasuo’s half-brother and a fellow Ionian swordsman. Upon learning of Yasuo’s apparent betrayal, Yone sought him out but was killed in self-defense. After being resurrected by an Azakana, Yone now wields two swords: his original Ionian blade and a cursed Azakana sword. They reflect his past life and newfound purpose as a demon hunter.
